Juneteenth Celebrations will be held in the Mt. Olive Community of Elizabethtown between June 15 and June 19.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the date on which enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, received the news they were free.

The daily Mt. Olive Community celebrations start at 9 a.m.

Recreational activities plus food servings are scheduled 2–5 p.m. June 17 in the area across from Mt. Zion AME Zion Church which is located at 807 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. A scholarship ceremony follows at 6 p.m. in the Paul R. Brown Building located at 1360 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Scholarship sponsors are Fish Out of Water Inc., Mr. Wendell Johnson, Ilka Huntley McElveen, Salvation Station Empowerment Inc. and Smithfield Foods.

Celebrations wrap up June 19 with an 11 a.m. parade on West King Street. Parade participants must register by June 5 with Rev. Fletcher Collins and are requested to purchase a $30 T-shirt.
