Jury selection began Monday afternoon in the trial of Elizabethtown teenager Marquail Dashawn McKoy. The 17-year-old rejected a fourth plea offer from the state and plead not guilty to charges of attempted first degree murder and discharging a weapon into occupied property.

Before jury selection began in Bladen County Superior Court, Judge Beecher Gray denied three motions from McKoy’s lawyer, Allen Johnson, about the presentation of evidence and statements regarding McKoy’s arrest in March 2015.

McKoy rejected an offer Monday morning of a sentence between 38 and 58 months in custody in exchange for admitting guilt in the attempted murder charge. He also was offered three years supervised probation on the charge of discharging a weapon into an occupied property.

McKoy was told by the court that he faced up to 29 years in custody if convicted of the charges.

McKoy was arrested March 4, 2015 after Elizabethtown police officers were called to the 400 block of Kemp Street in response to shots being fired about 4:55 p.m. Investigators say that McKoy and another person had argued inside a residence. McKoy then left the residence and the second person followed a short time later, according to law enforcement.

McKoy is alleged to have shot at the man as he came out of the residence before fleeing the scene. No one was struck by the shot, but officers found a bullet hole in the man’s shirt, and the bullet went inside the residence, investigators say. McKoy was arrested about four hours later outside King Street gym in Elizabethtown.
