SPIVEY’S CORNER – Winning pitcher Shy Pone batted 3-3 with a double to lead East Bladen to a 5-4 victory over Midway Tuesday in the Four County Conference jayvee baseball opener for both teams.

Pone scored twice and drove in a run. On the mound he pitched 5 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks, while striking out three. Spencer Scott worked a scoreless sixth inning to pick up the save allowing only one hit.

Pone hammered a double to lead off the game and darted home on Greyson Heustess’ single with the first Eagle run. Heustess scored the second East Bladen run on Pierce Melvin’s sacrifice bunt.

The Raiders scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the first inning on 4 hits and two Eagle errors.

Eric Chancy smacked a one-out single in the top of the second and scooted home when Pone belted a single to right field that trimmed the margin to 4-3.

The Eagles took the lead in the top of the fifth. Pone started the winning rally with a single, and Melvin knocked him in with a single that tied the game. Melvin later scored the go-ahead run.

Chancy finished 2-3 at the plate with a run scored. Heustess, Melvin and Holden Clark added one hit each for the Eagles. Melvin drove in 2 runs, and Heustess knocked in one.

The Eagle jayvees improved to 3-1 with the victory and will host St. Pauls today (Wednesday) at 4 p.m.
