East Bladen’s jayvees built a 7-0 lead then withstood a late rally to edge Midway 8-7 Monday in Four County Conference jayvee baseball action at East.

The Eagles jumped in front with 4 first inning runs. Freshmen Shy Pone and Dan Tatum belted singles, and freshman Pierce Melvin reached base on an error as Pone scored.

Spencer Scott knocked in Tatum with a one-out single, and Tanner Meares slammed a double that scored Melvin. Eric Chancy smacked a single that drove in Meares.

East Bladen added 3 more runs in the second. Scott Howell reached base on an error, and Melvin hammered a 2-out double that plated Howell. Devan Stocks smacked a single that scored Melvin. After a walk to Scott, Meares laced a single that drove home Stocks.

Midway rallied for 4 runs in the fourth on 3 walks, 2 hits, a hit batter and an error. The Raiders trimmed the margin to 7-5 with a run in the fifth.

Meares walloped a double in the home fifth and came around to score on Cromartie’s infield out.

Midway capitalized on 2 errors and a single to scored 2 unearned runs in the final inning and trim the margin to 8-7.

Melvin pitched the 6-inning, complete-game for the Eagles. He struck out 7, walked 4, hit one and gave up 5 hits. Only 3 of the Midway runs were earned.

Meares batted 3-3, slugged 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and drove in two. Tatum and Pone were 2-4 with a run scored each.

Melvin smashed a run-scoring double and scored 2 runs. Scott, Stocks and Chancy all connected for run-scoring singles, and Stocks scored a run.

The Eagle jayvees are now 7-1 in league play and 10-2 overall. East Bladen travels to Pender today (Tuesday) for a 4 p.m. game.
