FAIRMONT – Alex Stephens beat the final buzzer with a 3-ball that closed a 9-2 Fairmont run and carried the Tornadoes to a 48-37 Southeastern Athletic Conference jayvee boys victory over East Bladen Monday night.

Darius Williamson buried a 3-point shot and a free throw, and Zac Metz, Peyton Tatum and Jaylen Suggs threw in baskets as the Eagles pulled to within 39-35 with 1:48 left to play. However 2 Tornado free throws and 2 steals that resulted in 2 Fairmont lay-ups stretched the lead to 45-35. Center Rodney Lacewell muscled in a lay-up for the final Eagle points.

Peyton Tatum topped the Eagle scoring list with 8 points. Metz, Lacewell and Williamson all finished with 6 points each. Lee Barnes added 4. Stephens led Fairmont with 12 points, and Issac McKellar followed with 8 points.

Tatum and Barnes threw in 2 baskets each in the opening quarter to keep the Eagles within 10-8. Metz tossed in 2 baskets in the 2nd quarter, and Tatum and Lacewell netted baskets to pull the Eagles within 17-16 at halftime.

Shannon Hankins drained a 3-point shot for East in the 3rd quarter, and Chace Butler, Williamson and Lacewell dropped in a basket each as the Eagles stayed within 27-25 at the 3rd period break.

The Eagles, now 2-4 in SAC-7 play and 5-6 overall, will travel to Red Springs Tuesday.
