DUNN – Free throw accuracy proved to be the difference Friday night as Midway outlasted East Bladen 49-46 in the Southeastern Athletic Conference jayvee boys basketball opener for both teams.

The Raiders connected on 18 of 26 free throws and sank 7 of 10 foul shots in the final quarter. The Eagles only converted 9 of their 22 attempts.

Freshman Keyshawn Kemp muscled in a pair of early baskets for the Eagles. Sherman Long and Shannon Hankins drilled in 3-point shots. Long tacked on 2 free throws, and Kewone Maynor and Malikah Moore netted baskets to keep the Eagles within 25-16 at halftime.

Long drained a 3-point shot and another basket to spark a 13-6 East rally in the 3rd quarter. Chace Butler, Maynor and Kemp threw in baskets and Butler, Hankins and Ronnie Covington hit free throws as East rallied to within 31-29.

Butler lit up the scoreboard with 2 baskets and 4 free throws in the final period. Kemp powered in 2 baskets, and Moore and Maynor added a basket each.

Butler led the East Bladen scoring with 11 points, and Long and Kemp followed with 10 points each. Maynor added 6 points. Wyatt Herring made 9 of 13 free throws and led Midway with 15 points. Travis Gist chipped in with 14 points.

The Eagle jayvees are now 6-2 on the season.
