WHITEVILLE – Caleb McLean poured in 16 points to lead Whiteville to a 35-21 non-conference jayvee boys’ basketball victory over East Bladen Friday night.
Baskets from Ronnie Covington and Khalil McKoy and 2 free throws each from Chace Butler and Shannon Hankins kept the Eagles within 11-8 at the 1st period break. Hankins drained a 3-point shot and 2 free throws, and Covington threw in another basket to keep East Bladen within 19-15 at the half.
Sherman Long buried a 3-point shot, and McKoy tossed in another bucket to pull the Eagles to within 27-20, but McKoy sank a late free throw for the only Eagle point in the final quarter.
Hankins topped the Eagle scoring with 7 points, and McKoy followed with 5 points. Covington totaled 4 points.
It was the first loss of the season for Coach Aking Elting’s Eagles who are now 6-1. East Bladen will open Southeastern Athletic Conference play Friday at Midway.
