ELIZABETHTOWN – East Bladen outlasted West Bladen 14-6 Thursday night in Four County Conference jayvee football action.

Both teams squandered early scoring chances. The Eagles drove to the West Bladen two yardline and lost the ball on a fumble in the first quarter.  The Knights fumbled a hand-off and turned the ball over inside the Eagle ten yardline in the first half.

Sophmore Eric Chancy put the Eagles ahead in the second quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run. Freshman Tayshaun Berkely caught a pass from freshman quarterback Jordan Robinson for the 2-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.

Sophmore fullback K. J. Bowen plowed into the end zone from a yard out for the other East Bladen touchdown.

“We moved the ball, but we just had too many fumbles and penalties,” said East Bladen Coach Ritchie Priest. “It has been the same story all year –too many mistakes.”

Aldo Hernandez scored the Knight touchdown on a run in the second half. Sophmore quarterback Kerron Washington ran for 135 yards to lead the Knight attack and completed all 3 of his passes for 50 yards.

Freshman Shemaiah Leak hauled in 2 of those passes for 40 yards and picked up another 40 yards rushing. Freshman Tra’Shawn Ballard caught the other Washington pass for a 10-yard gain.

Freshman Da’shawn Hines and Gabriel McDowell combined to add another 85 yards to the Knight rushing attack before giving way to injury and cramping.

“We played a little short-handed and a lot of our players played both ways,” said West Bladen Coach Kris Williams. “Several of our kids never left the field tonight.”

“Our kids played their tails off,” continued Coach Williams. “That lost fumble inside their ten in the first half could have made a big difference if we could have punched it in. Our defense fought hard all night and kept us in the game.”

The Eagles completed their season with a 6-1 record. West Bladen is now 3-6.
