kayla-thompsonClarkton native Kayla Thompson carded an even-par total of 216 Tuesday to lead her UNC-Wilmington Lady Seahawks to the championship of the William & Mary Invitational at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, VA.

Thompson shot an even-par 72 in Tuesday’s final round to finish tied for third with her UNC-W team Annette Lyche, a native of Norway. High Point’s Tan Cheeranont, a Thailand native, took individual honors with a 213 total. William & Mary’s Alessandra Liu was second at 214.

The 216 total was a career low for Thompson who was tied for the lead after firing a 2-under-par 70 in Sunday’s opening round. The West Bladen grad finished with a 74 on Monday which left her in a fourth-place tie after 2 rounds.

UNC-Wilmington posted team totals of 293 in each round and led the tournament from start to finish. The Lady Seahawks led by 5 shots after one round and by 12 strokes after both Monday and Tuesday’s round. It was the first tournament title for the UNC-W Ladies in 3 years.

The 879 three-round total tied a UNC-W school record, and the Lady Seahawks won by 12 shots over host William & Mary. Eastern Kentucky was third followed by High Point and Appalachian State in the 12-team event.

The Lady Seahawks will be idle until Oct 2-4 when they will compete in the UNC-Greensboro Forest Oaks Fall Classic.
