Kelsey Hammond has spent the past week in a whirlwind of activity since being crowned Miss Greater Southeastern. She has embarked on a schedule of appearances and preparing to compete at the Miss North Carolina Scholarship pageant in June.

“It was a wave of emotions. I was ecstatic,” said Hammond of being named to the title.

Hammond is the daughter of Larry and Beth Hammond and has one brother, Macon Hammond.  she is currently an online student at Liberty University and resides in Clarkton.

She said that she is preparing for competition at the Miss North Carolina through disciplined physical training and her talent will consist of a clogging routine. Hammond said she is adding some difficulty to her clogging routine and is ensuring the routine is outstanding.

Hammond’s platform is called Purpose Within the Pages and addresses the issue of illiteracy. She said it is a student oriented program. Hammond’s said she really wants to focus her platform on students because the ability to read and write has a tremendous impact on the rest of your life.

“Being an online student everything we turn in has to be typed or written out. You can tell some students struggle with reading and writing. There is not an emphasis on cursive writing anymore,” said Hammond.

Her sponsors were Blackwater Rhythm & Blues Band, Cape Fear Vineyard and Winery, Lu Mil Vineyard, Houston’s Peanuts, and Kent & Natalie Frazier.
