Cynthia Kinlaw Baker Nurse of Excellence

Registered Nurse Cynthia Kinlaw was named Southeastern Health’s (SeHealth) 2016 Baker Nurse of Excellence during a ceremony hosted by the organization’s Professional Growth Council May 3 as part of National Nurses Week.

Kinlaw has worked in Southeastern Health’s Emergency Room since 1997. She holds multiple certifications and currently works as one of the ER’s Clinical Supervisors. She graduated as an Ambassador from Southeastern Community College with an associate’s degree in nursing in 1997. As a nurse, she volunteers each year at Camp Care, Southeastern Hospice’s weekend bereavement camp for youth who have suffered a significant loss in their life. She also serves as a camp nurse in her church during the summer. She has said that she loves nursing in every aspect of her life. Kinlaw’s co-workers have described her as a perfect example of a quality nursing professional. They have said that she embodies a calming presence, soft-spoken tone of voice and professionalism that is much needed especially in an ER setting.

A native of White Oak in Bladen County, Kinlaw lives in St. Pauls with her husband of 33 years, Kenny. She has four grown children, Randy, Wayne, Amanda and Dallas, and seven grandchildren.

In addition to Kinlaw, two other 2016 finalist nominees for the award were Donna Davis and Julie Zaha. The winner was selected by a panel based on nomination applications and interviews. Past Baker winners are Tammy McDuffie, 2015, and Elizabeth Moore, 2014.

The Baker Nurse of Excellence award, formerly known as the Nurse of the Year, was renamed in 2014 in honor of Dr. Horace Baker, Sr., founder of the Baker Sanatorium which later merged with Thompson Hospital to form what was known as the Baker-Thompson Memorial Hospital in Lumberton in 1946. These two older facilities were replaced by a new 140-bed hospital known as Robeson County Memorial Hospital in 1953 which later became Southeastern Regional Medical Center. The overall organization was renamed Southeastern Health in 2013 but the medical center retained the Southeastern Regional Medical Center name.
