The Elizabethtown Kiwanis Club changed their regular meeting at San Jose Restaurant from the third Tuesday to the second Tuesday this month in honor of Flag Day and to show unity on the special day.

The members not only saluted the American flag at their meeting remembering why the day is special, but they gave scholarships to two local high school seniors and they continued planning their fundraiser to benefit the club and the Bladen County EMS Training Facility.

Jackson Burney an East Bladen High School graduate and Jeffery G. Shipman a West Bladen High School graduate accepted their scholarships from the club at the meeting. The two students were accompanied by their families at the dinner gathering to help celebrate the occasion.

Burney told the group he will be attending the University of North Carolina of Wilmington. Shipman announced he will attend Fayetteville State University. The two men are both very active in their communities and schools while maintaining high marks in all their classes.

The club also trimmed down some work on their upcoming fundraiser to benefit the club and the EMS Training Facility. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, August 6th, at Dublin Motor Speedway starting at 8 am.

There will be a Fear Factor Race, Mud War, an Apparatus Race for emergency response vehicles, a dunking booth, a DJ, food for sale, bounce houses, a fifty-fifty drawing, games and more!

Sponsorship levels are available for any business that would like to sponsor the event. Thus far the sponsors are Thompson’s Small Engine Repair, Dublin Motor Speedway, Cape Fear Heating & Cooling, BladenOnline.com. and CAB Marketing. The fundraising proceeds will be split down the middle with half going to the Bladen County EMS Training Facility and half going to the Kiwanis Club to help children.

If you would like more information or if you would like to sponsor the fundraiser, please contact Charlotte Smith at (910)876-5393, email bladenonline.com@gmail.com, or talk with one of the other Kiwanis Members.
