Kiwanis Club Gives to Boys and Girls Homes
The Elizabethtown Kiwanis Club gave back this week in a big way and learned more about the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina located in Lake Waccamaw. Gary Greene, Director of Civic Club Development at the Boys and Girls Homes spoke to the club about progress at the homes and accepted a check in the amount of $2,000 from Kiwanian, William Thompson, on behalf of the local club this past Tuesday evening.
Gary Greene announced the Girls and Boys Homes will be having a Ground Breaking Ceremony today, Thursday, for the Fleming Academy. The fundraising efforts for the academy are still underway. Their goal is to receive $84,000 more in donations.
Greene said, “We have 48 kids on campus right now including three teen moms and their children, and we have 108 children in foster care.”
The school will have six classrooms and will help educate up to 88 students according to Greene. The Fleming Academy is a North Carolina Public Charter School already in session. The academy educates students in grades 6th through 12th grade and operates year-round, on a trimester schedule.
