The Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown, Bladen County, NC has announced their eagerly anticipated annual canned food drive competition, a tradition that has been making a significant impact in the community since 2018. This friendly challenge is not only a testament to the spirit of giving but also a source of pride for the high schools involved. Both East Bladen High School and West Bladen High School, under the leadership of Dr. Peggy Hester and Ms. Georgia Spaulding, respectively, have enthusiastically accepted the challenge once again this year.

The photo above shows Dr. Lisa Bryan, President of the Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown, Bladen County, NC, giving instructions.

The competition kicked off in October and will continue through the end of November. The primary objective is to collect as many canned goods as possible to support local food pantries, ensuring that families in need have a bountiful Thanksgiving. It’s a noble cause that brings together students, teachers, and the wider community to make a difference.

Ms. Jennifer Hair, East Bladen’s sponsor/teacher, and Ms. Dawn Russ, West Bladen’s sponsor/teacher, both expressed excitement for the annual canned food drive.

“The student government has always done a canned food drive this time of year, but the challenge makes it fun. We are excited this year because we have even more support,” Ms. Russ said.

The highlight of the competition is the thrilling showdown between the two high schools. Whichever school manages to collect the most cans will claim victory and receive a trophy as a token of appreciation.

Next week, members of the Kiwanis Club from Bladen County will pay visits to each school to collect some of the canned food that have been generously donated. The food collected will then be delivered to the Bladen Crisis Center Food Pantry, providing essential support to those facing food insecurity during the holiday season.

The award presentation will take place during half-time at the highly anticipated East Bladen vs. West Bladen game on December 5th at East Bladen High School.

Throughout the years, this annual event has seen both high schools rise to the challenge, collecting tens of thousands of canned food items for the benefit of the local community. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about the spirit of compassion and unity that drives these young students to give back and make a meaningful impact.

The Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown, along with the dedicated educators, students, and community members, continues to foster a culture of giving and service that resonates far beyond the confines of the competition. It’s a testament to the power of community involvement and a reminder that together, we can make a positive change in the lives of those in need, especially during the holiday season.
