If you have followed East Bladen athletics over the last 3 seasons, you are well-acquainted with senior Kyle Tatum and his exploits on the football field and baseball diamond.

As a junior Tatum was an All-Conference catcher on the Eagles Four County Conference champion baseball team and was the Most Valuable Player on East Bladen’s 10-3 football team. He was also an All-Conference selection as a running back/defensive back in football.

The other thing that people instantly noticed was Kyle’s long flowing blond hair. This past week Kyle decided to get a haircut.

“It started out as a bet with some of his hunting buddies about who was going to kill the first deer and the loser having to get a haircut,” said Kyle’s mom Dana. “But then he decided he wanted to get it done before football season started. You know athletes can be a little superstitious.”

“If things don’t go well on the field for him after the haircut, we may have to get him a wig,” laughed Chris Tatum, Kyle’s dad.

“I was thinking about getting it cut,” said Kyle. “Then I heard about a chance to donate the hair to Locks of Love, and I decided to do it for a good cause.”

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Asked about whether playing without the hair would have a Samsonesque effect on him, Kyle said, “It will be fine. I will find out in the weight room if it makes a difference. That is where I will be able to tell.”
