WEBSTER GROVES, MO – Clarkton native Kyra Gensel has been named the Co-Defensive Volleyball Player of the Year for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).

Gensel, a junior libero for the Webster University Gorloks, was also named Second Team All-Conference Volleyball for the SLIAC. She shared the Defensive Player of the Year honor with Iowa Wesleyan’s Jenna Murphy.

The Gorloks finished in 2nd place in the SLIAC with a 10-3 record and are currently ranked No. 25 nationally in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Coaches poll. Webster will wrap up the season by competing in the AVCA Division III Invitational Tournament in Indianapolis April 9-10.

Gensel was fifth in the SLIAC in digs per set (4.62) and total digs (431). The former Harrells Christian star posted double-digit digs in 13 of 15 matches and had 20 or more digs in a match 4 times. She also recorded 10 aces and 27 assists.

As a sophomore in 2019 Gensel played in all 29 matches for Webster and was 4th on the team in digs (234) and aces (21). She had double-digit digs in 11 matches and recorded a career-high of 21 digs in the season-opener against North Pitt.

Kyra, the daughter of Dr. Douglas Gensel and Valerie Gensel was named to the 2019 SLIAC All-Academic Team and has been named to the Dean’s List in all 3 of her years at Webster. She has also served as a volleyball coach for a local Volleyball Club.

Last year Kyra studied at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in the area of COVID research in New York. She will be entering the Air Force in a year and continue her career in medicine and her work with Wounded Warriors.
