ELON – White Lake native Lacey Suggs was honored Wednesday as the Colonial Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the CAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Suggs holds a 3.71 grade point average in Exercise Science, with a double minor in Business and Health. The senior guard has started 29 of 30 games this season for UNC-Wilmington and is the team’s 2nd leading scorer with an average of 12.7 points per game.

The East Bladen grad was recognized before the Lady Seahawks opening round tournament game against College of Charleston. Suggs fired in 14 points as UNC-Wilmington advanced with a 69-55 victory.

Suggs connected on 6 of 13 shots from the field, grabbed 5 rebounds and delivered 3 assists. She sparked an opening 16-2 UNC-Wilmington run with 7 points, the Lady Seahawks were never headed after that.

Her 14 points moved Suggs into 14th place on the Lady Seahawks career-scoring list with 1,059 points. She has scored in double-figures in 22 of 30 games this season.

UNC-Wilmington advances to play top-seeded Drexel at noon Thursday.
