
East Bladen 47, Hoke County 26
Senior Lacey Suggs poured in 27 points to lead East Bladen’s Lady Eagles to a 47-26 victory over Hoke County Saturday in the Laney Big Shots Hoop Feast at Wilmington Laney High.
Suggs also filled up the stat sheet with 6 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. The 5-9 forward connected on 7 of her 8 free throw attempts and was named the Big Shots Hoop Feast Most Valuable Player for the second straight game.
Free throw shooting had been an issue in East Bladen’s 46-42 victory over Jack Britt Friday as the Lady Eagles made only 8 of 27 free throws. SaturdayEast Bladen converted 9 of 10 foul shots. “I guess we were more focused today,” said Lady Eagle Coach Patty Evers.
“We were a lot more under control today,” continued Coach Evers. “We were very patient on offense and had a great defensive effort. There was a lot more talking on the court today.”
The Lady Eagles took control with a 13-2 first quarter blitz. Suggs worked her way to the basket for a 3-point play then added four more baskets in the period. Senior Christiana Cromartie dropped in another bucket for East.
Senior Abby Ward, freshman Ja’Tyra Moore-Peterson and Suggs tossed in second quarter baskets for the Lady Eagles, and Suggs tacked on 2 free throws to keep the East Bladen halftime lead at 21-11.
Suggs pumped in a trio of baskets in the third quarter as the Lady Eagles stretched their lead to 31-16. Junior Emily Scott canned a pair of free throws, and Ward flipped in a basket in the period.
The Lady Eagles outscored Hoke 16-10 in the final quarter. Suggs sank 4 straight free throws and added another basket. Moore-Peterson tallied 4 points in the quarter, and Ward, junior Lexie Mendell and junior Danielle McDowell chipped in with one basket each.
Ward and Moore-Peterson followed Suggs on the scoring list with 6 points each. Ward dished out 7 assists and was credited with 4 steals. Moore-Peterson had 2 assists.
Scott pulled down a team-high 7 rebounds, and Cromartie grabbed 5 rebounds and blocked 2 shots. Freshman Ashley Hardin came up with 4 steals and collected 4 rebounds.
Sophmore center Mahogany Matthews led the Hoke County scoring with 10 points, and teammate Iyana Davis followed with 7 points.
East Bladen remains unbeaten at 4-0 after their second consecutive victory over a Class 4A opponent and will host East Columbus Monday at 6 p.m.
