Elizabethtown native Larrell Murchison was waived by the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, the team announced, ending his three-season time spent with the NFL squad.

Murchison, who is 25, played in 26 games for the Titans after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of N.C. State. The East Bladen High school graduate started five games on Tennessee’s defensive line in 2021.

The 6-foot-2, 297-pound defensive lineman spent the first six weeks of this season on the Titans’ practice squad before being elevated to the game roster for three games. After each of those games, Murchison was returned to the Titans’ practice squad. NFL rules allow a practice squad player to be elevated to the game roster three times during a season before being required to be placed on the 53-man game roster or let go. Murchison was signed to Tennessee’s 53-man game roster Nov. 15 for three games this season before being waived.

Murchison played in five games for Tennessee this season and was credited with two tackles, including one solo tackle. He played 61 snaps this season.

Murchison’s best season came in 2021 when he played in 11 games, including five starts, and had eight tackles, including one tackle for loss, two quarterback hurries and two quarterback pressures. He played 263 snaps that season.

In his rookie season of 2020, Murchison played in 10 games and 182 snaps with five tackles, including one tackle for loss.

According to NFL rules, a player who has accrued less than four years of experience is placed on waivers for a designated period of time, usually a day or two. If a team claims a player off waivers, his current contract remains in effect. If a player is not claimed off waivers within the designated time period, then the player is declared a free agent, his current contract is terminated and he can sign with any NFL team.

When a player who has four years of NFL experience or more is cut by his current team he is officially labeled as released. It means his contract is immediately terminated and he is a free agent.

If Murchison clears waivers, he will be eligible to sign with any other NFL team, which would include signing with the practice squad of another team.
