The Honorable Douglas B. Sasser, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge, and the Honorable Scott L. Ussery, Chief District Court Judge in consultation with the Office of District Attorney and Clerks of Superior Court from Bladen, Brunswick, and Columbus counties released the following statement regarding the function of local courts during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Following is the statement the officials released to media outlets:

“Earlier today leaders in the criminal justice system met to discuss the COVID-19 and its impact on the functioning of our court system. Effective immediately district and superior courts for Bladen, Brunswick, and Columbus counties are cancelled for the week of Monday, March 16th through Friday, March 20th except for defendants incarcerated in jail. Although the courthouses remain open, we will only handle a limited number of matters on a case-by-case basis as justice requires and proceedings for the purpose of individuals seeking emergency relief. Our goal is to reduce the spread of infection by limiting the number of people who are required to come to the courthouse. Please continue to monitor your local news outlets and https://www.nccourts.gov/ for updates.”
