SARASOTA, Fla. – Clarkton native Macon Hammond has been promoted to Class AA and will begin the 2022 regular season umpiring games in the Southern League.

Hammond will be part of a 3-member crew that will work the opening series at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama that begins Friday night, April 8th between the Rocket City Trash Pandas from Madison, Alabama and the host Barons.

The West Bladen grad will conclude minor league spring training on April 1st. Hammond worked Low Class A games last season, but was rated high enough on his spring training evaluations this year to make the jump to Class AA instead of calling in High Class A this season.

The promotion is one more step up the ladder toward the big leagues for Hammond. The next step up is AAA and umpires that do well at AAA can become a rover and be called up to the Major Leagues to replace umpires who need time off for family situations and emergencies.

Teams in the Southern League are located in Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle.
