Car CrashA man riding in the bed of a pick-up truck was ejected from the truck when it crashed on Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of NC 242 and Sweet Home Church Road near Elizabethtown.

William Harwood, 30, of Whiteville, has been airlifted to the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill. According to NC Highway Patrol Trooper B. Sellers, Harwood was “conscious and talking” when he was airlifted for further evaluation.

Trooper Sellers said the crash happened at about 1 p.m. Wednesday when the Ford truck carrying three people rolled over on NC 242 near the intersection with Sweet Home Church Road.

According to Sellers, Timothy Franklin Smith, 52, of Elizabethtown, was operating the Ford pick-up truck south on NC 242 when the vehicle ran off the road to the right. Sellers said that Smith overcorrected and ran off the road to the left, struck a ditch, and overturned.

Smith and another passenger, Dianna Hester, 34, of Elizabethtown, were transported to Bladen County Hospital where they were treated for their injuries.

Sellers said that Smith was charged with failure to maintain lane control and no operator’s license.
