Mark GillesipeElizabethtown Dixie Youth Baseball League President Mark Gillespie was inducted into Dixie Youth Baseball’s Danny Jones Club in ceremonies Saturday on DYB’s Opening Day in Elizabethtown.

The Danny Jones Club is an exclusive club whose membership is limited to those who have provided outstanding leadership and contributions to a local Dixie Youth Baseball league.

On hand Saturday to make the presentation to Gillespie was North Carolina DYB State Director Carey Wrenn. Other DYB officials present included National Directors Ken Britt and Larry Rudisill, District 9 Director Carl Newkirk and District 2 Director Frankie Burney.

“It took me completely by surprise,” said Gillespie. “I had no idea.” Also in attendance Saturday were Gillespie’s family and members of the Elizabethtown Dixie Youth Board of Directors.

Gillespie, an Elizabethtown native, has been heavily involved serving the youth of the community in both Dixie Youth Baseball and in Boy Scouts for most of his adult life  “I don’t remember exactly when I became league president,” he said. “Sometime around 1992.”

Last year Gillespie was named an Assistant North Carolina DYB State Director.

The Danny Jones Club is named after one of the four incorporators of Dixie Youth Baseball and who also was the first Commissioner of Dixie Youth Baseball. The local league nominates the person, the NCDYB State Board of Directors approves the application and the National Board of Directors ratifies the selection.
