CARY – Bladenboro’s Mary Caitlin Campbell won the Raw Women’s 3-Lift Open event for the 72kg (154 pound) Class Saturday in the USA Powerlifting North Carolina State Championships at the Athletic Lab Gym.

Campbell who finished second in the same event at last year’s state meet also set a North Carolina State record for the squat in her weight class with a lift of 162.5 kgs (358.2 pounds).

In the bench press, Campbell posted a lift of 90 kgs (198.4 pounds) that was a meet-high lift for any female in any class Saturday.

The Bladenboro native placed third in the dead lift with a pull of 167.5 kgs (369.3 pounds) but her total of 420 kgs (925.9 pounds) for the three lifts matched Taylor Carney of Lenoir who rallied with a dead-lift of 182.5 kgs.

Campbell won the tie-breaker with a Wilks formula score of 425 compared to Carney’s 415. The Wilks Formula is used to measure the strength of a powerlifter compared to powerlifters of different weights and uses a coefficient that normalizes the weight lifted across all body weights. Carney had a 7-pound advantage in body weight over Campbell.

Campbell improved over her totals from last year’s state meet in every lift and raised her total for the three lifts from 871 pounds a year ago to 926 this year.
