With area residents dealing with the flooding and destruction inflicted by Hurricane Matthew, local sports has been put on the back-burner for the moment, but the clock is ticking for teams who could potentially be involved in NCHSAA post-season play-offs.

NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker released a statement earlier this week that shifted the deadline for reporting women’s tennis regional qualifiers to the NCHSAA from Monday, October 17 to Wednesday, October 19 at 3 p.m. The deadline for reporting dual team tennis qualifiers was moved from October 17 to October 24 at 6 a.m. The postseason schedules for volleyball, football, cross country and men’s soccer have not been changed at this time.

The Four County Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament that would have helped determine the league’s representatives in the NCHSAA Regionals was scheduled for Wednesday, October 12. With Bladen County Schools out of school this week and possibly for most of next week, no make-up date for the tournament has been set at this time.

The Four County Conference receives berths for 2 singles players and 2 doubles teams. “I hope that we can somehow get our tournament in,” said West Bladen Tennis Coach Jeff Atkinson. “If not, then the coaches will have to decide based on records.”

Atkinson received this information from Athletic Director Jeff Sawvel of Clinton who is the conference president. One major problem with that scenario is that East Bladen and Clinton’s first match was suspended by rain and both the completion of that match and their second match were postponed due to Matthew.

“I can’t see how you can base it on records when everyone has not played everyone,” said Coach Atkinson. “I am hoping we get to play the tournament.”

Atkinson’s Lady Knights are 7-0 in Four County play and 15-0 overall.
