East Bladen senior star Maya McDonald has been named to the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association’s All-District 2 first team and Lady Eagle Coach Patty Evers was named the District 2 Coach of the Year.

McDonald led the Lady Eagles in scoring (13 ppg), rebounds (9 rpg), assists (5.2 apg) and was 2nd on the team in steals (4 spg). East Bladen posted a 26-4 record and advanced to the Class 2A Eastern Regionals.

During the playoffs, McDonald averaged 10.5 points and 12.5 rebounds including a monster 24-rebound game in a 67-58 victory over East Carteret in the 2nd round and a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 71-62 3rd round win at North Lenoir.

During McDonald’s 4-year career, the Lady Eagles won 83 games and only lost 11. After their loss in the regionals, Evers said, “I can’t say enough about these seniors and what they have meant to this program.”

The 26-4 finish raised Coach Evers’ career record to 565-134 over 26 years at Tar Heel High then East Bladen. In 21 years at East her teams have compiled a record of 491-92. She has coached the Lady Eagles to 13 conference championships, 4 NCHSAA State Runners-up finishes and 10 regional appearances.

In January Evers was selected as one of the head coaches for the McDonald’s All-America Game that will be played in Chicago on March 29th. In November she was honored as a recipient of the John Wooden Legacy Award for 2021.
