CHAPEL HILL – East Bladen’s Maya McDonald has been named the winner of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Performance of the Week award. She is the 2nd East Bladen soccer athlete to win the award this season. Senior Garrett Melvin won the award earlier this year.

McDonald poured in 15 goals and dished out 3 assists in 3 Lady Eagle victories. The high-scoring junior fired in a school-record 5 goals in East Bladen’s 9-0 win over West Bladen.

McDonald then broke that record by pounding the nets with 6 goals in an 8-0 victory over St. Pauls. Her six goals in a game tied an NCHSAA record for the 31st most goals in a single game.

“Maya is one of the most explosive players I have ever coached,” said East Bladen Coach Jay Raynor. “She plays the game and never seems to be rushed. She’s a gamer and makes things happen. Mya has had an amazing year and last week was unbelievable.

In her 3rd game of the week, McDonald racked up 4 more goals in a 9-0 win over St. Pauls to finish with 15 goals for the week.

“Maya loves being challenged and loves to compete,” continued Raynor. “She flourishes on the soccer field and does it the right way. Mya doesn’t like the spotlight and is extremely humble. Proud of her. I know she is thankful and contributes her success to her teammates. She scores a lot but she is every bit a team player.”
