RALEIGH – With the 2019 hurricane season upon us, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is encouraging residents to be prepared this season to avoid the suffering that followed last year’s Hurricane Florence on the coast and mudflows in the western part of the state. Causey has scheduled disaster relief town hall meetings across the state to inform residents, agents and real estate agents.

One of those meetings is scheduled for Wednesday, July 24 at 6 p.m. in the Robeson Community College auditorium. The school is loated at 5160 Fayetteville Road in Lumberton.

Dr. Michelle Osborne, Chief Deputy Commissioner of Insurance, will conduct the town hall meetings.

The meetings will discuss what to do before, during and after the storm so that residents’ properties are protected and/or covered in the event of storm damage or mudslides. Speakers also will discuss the importance of flood insurance so that residents can alleviate the suffering from extreme property loss due to flooding and mudslides.

Standard homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover flood damage. Causey also encourages residents to buy flood insurance before a storm heads your way, since there is a 30-day waiting period for flood insurance to take effect.

If you are still suffering from last year’s disasters, such as hurricanes or mudflows, Department of Insurance representatives will be on hand to help with your questions and claims.

In addition to disaster preparedness and relief, there will be experts discussing:

• How the Department of Insurance can help you with Medicare questions.

• How the Department of Insurance can help with denied health insurance claims and appeals.

• How the Department of Insurance can help with property or casualty insurance claims.

• How everyone can help in the campaign to reduce insurance fraud and help hold down rates.

Other meetings scheduled are:

Tuesday, July 9, 2 p.m.: Yadkin County Agricultural & Educational Building, Conference Room, Yadkinville.

Wednesday, July 10, 7 p.m.: Watauga High School auditorium, Boone.

Thursday, July 11, noon: Surry County Service Center, Farm Bureau Room, Dobson.

Thursday, July 25, 7 p.m.: Commissioners’ Chambers, Onslow County Government Center, Jacksonville.
