The meteorological winter has come to a close, according to Timothy Armstrong with the National Weather Service office in Wilmington. The months of December, January, and February constitute meteorological winter, said Armstrong. For the winter of 2016-2017, statistics show the region ran well above normal for temperatures, with rainfall generally below normal. Almost half of our winter rain fell just in December, with much drier conditions in January and February.

It was the sixth warmest recorded winter in Florence, S.C. and the 12th warmest in Wilmington, according to Armstrong.

“La Nina was the primary climate driver, and it does tend to bring warm and dry weather to the eastern Carolinas,” said Armstrong.

Armstrong said the only arctic outbreak of note was January 7-9 when we had low temperatures in the teens for two nights and small amounts of frozen precipitation (trace to 0.2″) in spots.
