Methodist University and Bladen Community College held a virtual signing Thursday, Jan. 28 as the presidents of each school, Methodist’s Dr. Stanley T. Wearden and BCC’s Dr. Amanda Lee, signed a partnership agreement that makes transferring credits from Bladen Community College to Methodist’s four-year program much easier.
Methodist University’s Provost, Dr. Suzanne Blum Malley, and Associate VP of Academic Affairs, Dr. Beth Carter, as well as Bladen Community College’s Jeffery T. Kornegay, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer, were also in attendance.
“We are so excited about this opportunity. This agreement provides a very unique opportunity for our students,” Lee said. “As well as the guarantee of tuition, we are so thankful Methodist University is willing to support our students financially. I believe continuing the small class size, along with the large variety of undergraduate and graduate programs Methodist offers, will play a huge part in their success. I’m really excited about this and how it’s just one more example of the ways our two colleges working together.”
The program is part of Methodist University’s commitment to working closely with neighboring community colleges in an effort to create a clear path for transferring credits for partnering schools. Methodist will accept Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees. All transfer credit must comply with the policies outlined in Methodist University’s academic catalogue.
“This type of agreement has been one of my top priorities since starting as president of MU two years ago,” Wearden said. “There are many things Bladen Community and Methodist University have in common, but the most fundamental is the deep belief in the transformative power of higher education. This is a great opportunity for Bladen Community College and Methodist University.”
Students may apply and be admitted to one of Methodist’s community college partnering schools and Methodist at the same time, granting a pathway for earning an associate degree or bachelor’s degree from Methodist. Students may apply to Methodist without incurring any application fees and students are guaranteed admission upon successful completion of the AA/AS/AAS degree with a 2.0 grade-point average from a community college partner.
Additional Benefits
Students in the partnering program will receive joint financial aid and academic advising in an effort to maximize their academic savings. They may also take two Methodist classes, up to eight credits, while completing their associate degree at a partnering college at the current tuition rate of their community college. Students admitted through the transfer program may request a Methodist student identification card which allows admission to Methodist’s campus events and access to the Davis Memorial Library with computers and library databases.
