CLARKTON – Weston Hilburn knocked in the go-ahead run with a 5th inning double as Bladenboro completed a perfect 10-0 season with a 4-2 Waccamaw Middle School Conference baseball victory over Clarkton School of Discovery Wednesday.
Coach Tim Benton’s Bulldogs finished 8-0 in league play to capture the Waccamaw’s ‘A’ League baseball championship.
With the score tied 2-2, Hunter Hester reached base on an error to begin the Bulldog fifth then stole 2nd base. Hilburn slammed his double to left field that scored Hester. Ashton Davis reached base on an error that scored Hilburn with an insurance run.
Hester relieved Bulldog starting pitcher Gavin Elks after the Blue Devils had tied the score 2-2 in the 3rd inning and loaded the bases. Hester struck out the 1st batter that he faced to end the inning, then struck out 5 of the next 7 batters he faced over the final 2 innings to end the game and pick up the victory.
Jonah Bryan started the Bulldog 3rd inning with a walk and stole 2nd base. Hester launched a drive to center field that was misplayed allowing Jonah Bryan to score. Hilburn followed with another drive to center field that resulted in another error that scored Hester for a 2-0 Bulldog lead.
Hunter Simmons and Claxton Tatum drew walks to start the Clarkton 3rd inning. Dashon Campbell smashed a single to right field that scored Simmons, and walks to Isaiah Robinson and Cayden Moore forced home Tatum with the tying run.
Elks worked 2.2 innings on the mound for the Bulldogs and gave up 2 runs on 6 walks, a hit and a hit batter while striking out five. Hester struck out 6 in his 2.1 innings of no-hit scoreless relief.
Hilburn doubled home a run and scored a run. Hester scored 2 runs, and Jonah Bryan scored a run.
Tatum pitched 5 innings of 1-hit ball and allowed 4 runs, while striking out 9, walking 5 and hitting one batter. Campbell had the only CSD hit and drove in a run. Tatum scored a run, and Cayden Moore drove in a run.
