TAR HEEL – Aaron Wren knocked in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, and Michael Young struck out 20 batters as Bladenboro defeated Tar Heel 6-4 Monday in Waccamaw Middle School Conference baseball action.

Andre Moore drew a lead-off walk in the Bulldog eighth inning and raced home on Wren’s single to snap a 4-4 tie. Wren later scored as Stephen Matheson reached base on an error.

Wren started on the mound for Bladenboro but was relieved in the first inning by Young who struck out 20 batters in 8 innings and allowed 3 runs – one earned – on 2 hits and 3 walks to pick up the win.

Moore was hit by a pitch to start the game and scooted home when Young blasted a triple. Young later scored to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0.

I’Keir Murchison hammered a double to start the Panther first inning, and walks to Destin Montgomery, Jordan Underwood and Purnell Hooper forced home Murchison to trim the lead to 2-1.

Ahmir Stepps walked and sprinted home when Montgomery belted a single to tie the game 2-2.

Will Durden smacked a single that drove in Matheson who had walked in the Bladenboro third inning to vault the Bulldogs ahead 3-2.

Jordan Bryan reached base on an error to begin the Panther third inning, and later scored to tie the game 3-3 when Nolan Sessoms reached base on an error.

The Panthers took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning when Montgomery walked and dashed home when Underwood reached base on an error.

Bladenboro tied the game 4-4 in the seventh when Trenton Meares and Moore drew walks and Young smashed a single that scored Meares.

Young batted 3-5 with a triple, 2 runs batted in and a run scored to lead the Bulldog hitters. Wadeyn Norris slammed a double, and Durden and Wren smacked rbi singles. Moore scored 2 runs, and Matheson, Wren and Meares scored one run each.

Murchison doubled and scored a run to lead the Panthers. Montgomery and Stepps added one hit each. Montgomery and Hooper drove in runs, and Montgomery, Bryan, and Stepps scored one run each.

Tar Heel will travel to Elizabethtown Thursday, while Coach Keith Wren’s Bulldogs are scheduled to play Emereau Charter Thursday.
