Clarkton School of Discovery exploded for 11 first inning runs in route to a 15-0 Bladen Five Middle School Conference baseball victory over visiting Elizabethtown Middle School Thursday afternoon.

In the top of the first, Jordan Robinson and Josh McKoy reached base for the Cougars but were not able to score.

In the bottom of the first, Clarkton loaded the bases on a single by Dan Tatum, Greyson Heustess being hit by a pitch, and Pierce Melvin reaching on catcher’s interference.  A walk to Cody Butler scored Tatum. Holden Clark knocked in Heustess and Melvin with a single.

After Shy Pone walked and Eric Chancy reached on a fielder’s choice, Spencer Scott cracked a single to drive in Clark and Pone. Jake Evans was hit by a pitch, and Tatum’s sacrifice plated Chancy. Heustess slammed a double that brought home Scott and Evans.

Melvin hammered a double to score Heustess, and Butler belted a single that scored Melvin.  Pone swatted a single to score Butler.

In the top of the second, walks to Riley Merritt, Corey McKoy, and Preston Sells loaded the bases for Elizabethtown, but Clarkton retired the next three batters to end the scoring threat.

In the bottom of the second, Evans and Tatum reached base but a double play ended the Clarkton scoring opportunity.

In the top of the third, Josh McKoy, Jaylin Robinson, and Merritt reached base for Elizabethtown but were not able to score.

Clarkton added four runs in the bottom of the third.  Clark started  the inning with a single and stole second. Pone connected for a single that scored Clark. Chancy ripped a double that plated Pone.  Marshall Tatum drove in Chancy with a single to end the scoring.

The game ended after three innings due to the 15-run mercy rule. Clarkton completed the season undefeated at 6-0 in the conference and 9-0 overall to win the conference championship.

Butler went the distance on the mound for the Blue Devils. Corey McKoy started on the hill for Elizabethtown, but was relieved by Josh McKoy in the second inning.

Dan Tatum and Clark topped the Blue Devil hitters with two hits each. Heustess, Melvin and Chancy laced a double each. Butler, Pone, Scott and Marshall Tatum added one single each.

Josh McKoy led the Elizabethtown hitters with a pair of singles.

Coach Darrell Melvin concluded a 23-year baseball coaching career at Clarkton School of Discovery with the victory. Melvin’s CSD baseball teams have won 45 games in a row and 9 of the last 10 conference championships.
