TAR HEEL – Lee Barnes pitched a complete game 9-hitter and struck out 7 batters to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to a 16-4 Waccamaw Middle School Conference baseball victory over Tar Heel Thursday.

Barnes didn’t walk a batter and only 3 of the 4 runs were earned. The righthander threw only 80 pitches – 63 strikes.

Nyquan Richardson drew a one-out walk in the CSD first inning, and Barnes laced a single to rightfield. Richardson raced home on a passed ball that sent Barnes to third base. Jake Futrell’s sacrifice scored Barnes for a 2-0 lead.

Jordan Bryan walloped a double to centerfield in the Panther first inning, and Jordan Underwood knocked in Bryan with a single to center that sliced the lead to 2-1.

Maison Brooks walked in the Blue Devil second, and Samaj Dove slapped a single to right. Garrett Dunham walked, and Richardson reached base on an error that scored Brooks and Dove. Barnes walked, and Dunham darted home on a passed ball. Parker Greene reached base on an error that scored Richardson and Barnes to stretch the lead to 7-1.

Brooks swatted a single to left in the Clarkton third inning and Dunham walked. Brooks sprinted home on a passed ball, and Dunham scooted home on a wild pitch for a 9-1 lead.

Destin Montgomery led off the Tar Heel third with a single to rightfield. Bryan blasted a double to left that scored Montgomery, and Underwood lined a single to center field. Bryan scored on an error, and Nolan Sessoms reached base on an error that scored Underwood and narrowed the gap to 9-4.

Dove smacked a single to rightfield in the Blue Devil fifth inning, and Dunham walked. Richardson smashed a single to right that scored Dove and Dunham to pad the lead to 11-4.

Ja’Nathan Johnson reached base on an error in the Clarkton sixth inning and dashed home when Brooks cracked a single to center for a 12-4 lead.

Barnes walked to start the CSD seventh, and Futrell laced a single to center. An error on the play scored Barnes. Greene walked, and Johnson reached base on an error that scored Futrell. C. J. Jones, the courtesy runner for Greene, scored on a passed ball, and Brooks knocked in Johnson with a single.

Brooks batted 3-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in to lead the Blue Devil hitters. Richardson finished 2-4 at the plate with a double, 4 rbi’s and 2 runs scored. Dove batted 2-4 with 2 runs scored. Greene, Futrell and Barnes added one hit each. Dunham and Barnes scored 3 runs each. Johnson scored twice, and Futrell and Jones scored one run each. Futrell drove in a run.

Bryan batted 2-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and an rbi to lead the Panthers. Underwood finished 2-4 at the plate with an rbi and a run scored. Marcus Jones batted 2-3, and Montgomery, Sessoms and Lucas Davis added one hit each. Montgomery scored a run.

I’Keir Murchison started on the mound for the Panthers and pitched 5.2 innings allowing 12 runs – 6 earned – on 8 hits and 8 walks while striking out four. Jones pitched 0.2 innings allowing a run on a walk. Montgomery pitched the final inning and allowed 3 unearned runs on 2 hits and a walk while striking out one.

Coach Robert Mazur’s Blue Devils will host Bladenboro Monday, while Tar Heel will entertain Nakina Monday.
