ELIZABETHTOWN – A 12-run, 3rd inning explosion carried East Columbus to a 16-1 lead and eventual 17-7 Waccamaw Middle School Conference season-opening baseball victory over Elizabethtown Monday.

The Hawks scored 2 runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings, before walks to Fox Sutton, Damian Maynor, Tykee Hill and Isaiah Lloyd produced a Cougar run in the 2nd inning. DeVance Tatum led off the 3rd inning with a single, and Sutton knocked him in with a single.

Jadarius McArthur and Sutton belted singles to start the Cougars 5-run 5th inning. Trey Wilson, Jaden Lewis and Lloyd all drew walks before Prince McKoy was hit by a pitch, and Tatum delivered a 2-run single.

Sutton batted 2-for-3 with a run batted in and 2 runs scored for the Cougars. Tatum finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, and McArthur also batted 2-for-3 with a run scored. Lloyd drew 2 walks that forced home 2 runs, and Lewis and McKoy had 1 RBI each. Lloyd, Lewis and Wilson scored runs.

Damian Maynor, Sutton and Tatum shared the pitching duties for the Cougars who will travel to Whiteville Central Wednesday.
