ELIZABETHTOWN – Hunter Smith pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine to lead Elizabethtown to a 13-0 Waccamaw Middle School Conference victory over Tar Heel Thursday.

Evan Pait and Donavan Burton drew walks to begin the Cougar first inning. Garrison Tatum laced a single to right that scored Pait and Burton, and Smith pounded a double that scored Garrison Tatum.

Hunter Elks reached base on an error, and Zamar Lewis and Chase Knight drew walks. Elks and Lewis both stole home on the back end of double steals, and Nathan Howell knocked in Knight with a single for a 6-0 lead.

Burton drew a lead-off walk to start the Cougar second inning but was retired on Garrison Tatum’s fielder’s choice. Tatum stole 2 bases and scored when Weston Hatcher ripped a single to left-centerfield.

Elizabethtown added 4 more runs in the third inning. Lewis led off with a single, and Knight drove in Lewis with a single. Coleman Tatum walked, and Garrison Tatum smashed a double that scored Knight and Coleman Tatum. Smith swatted a single to right-centerfield that scored Garrison Tatum and stretched the lead to 11-0.

Kelac Autry and Knight drew walks and stole their way around the bases in the fourth inning for the final two Cougar runs.

Smith batted 2-3 with a double and 2 runs batted in to lead the Cougars at the plate. Garrison Tatum finished 2-4 at the plate with a double, 3 runs scored and 4 rbi’s. Hatcher, Lewis, Knight and Howell added one hit each. Knight scored 3 runs, and Burton and Lewis scored 2 runs each. Pait, Coleman Tatum, Elks, and Autry scored one run each. Hatcher, Knight and Howell had one rbi each.

Jordan Bryan clobbered a double to right-centerfield in the fourth inning for the only Panther hit. I’ Keir Murchison started on the mound for the Panthers.

Both teams will be idle until after the Easter Break when they will participate in the Bladen County Baseball Tournament at Tar Heel.
