ELIZABETHTOWN – A trio of Elizabethtown pitchers – Ty Mathis, Evan Pait and Chase Knight – combined to pitch a 5-inning no-hitter Tuesday to lead the Cougars to a 14-0 Bladen Five Middle School Conference baseball victory over Tar Heel.

Mathis pitched the first 3 innings to pick up the victory, striking out seven batters and walking one. Pait relieved and pitched 1.2 innings, walking one and striking out one. Knight came on in the fifth to strike out the only batter that he faced.

Chase Starkloff slammed a double to centerfield to start the Cougar first inning, and Jackson Wright drove him in with a single. Wright stole second base and advanced on a passed ball. Pait’s fielder’s choice scored Wright for a 2-0 lead.

Mathis lined a one-out double in the third inning, and Pait knocked him in with a double. Coleman Tatum smashed a double that scored Pait. Ahmad Powell belted a single that scored Coleman Tatum. Powell raced home on Korey Smith’s single for a 6-0 lead.

Coleman Tatum smacked a single that scored Mathis. Weston Hatcher laced a single that scored Coleman Tatum. Zamar Lewis rapped a single that scored Hatcher. Korey Smith smashed a double that scored Lewis.

Starkloff reached base on a passed third strike, and Wright reached base on an error that scored Korey Smith. Starkloff reached base as Bullard reached base on an error.

Korey Smith batted 2-2 with a double, a run scored and a run batted in to lead the Cougar hitters. Wright finished 2-3 at the plate with a triple and 2 rbi’s. Coleman Tatum batted 2-3 with a double, 2 runs scored and 2 rbi’s.
