TAR HEEL – Daquan Cox batted 4-5 and scored 4 runs to lead Nakina to a 14-3 Waccamaw Middle School Conference baseball victory over Tar Heel Monday.
The Mustangs pulled away with 4 runs in the fifth for an 8-3 lead and tacked on 6 more runs in the seventh.
Panther pitcher Destin Montgomery cracked a first inning single, stole second and third base and raced home on Jordan Underwood’s sacrifice fly to keep Tar Heel within 2-1.
Nolan Sessoms walked to start the Panther second inning, and I’keir Murchison belted a single. Sessoms scored to trim the Mustang lead to 4-2.
Sessoms led off the Tar Heel fourth with a single, and Murchison and Ahmir Stepps smacked singles that scored Sessoms and pulled the Panthers to within 4-3.
Murchison batted 3-4 to lead the Panther hitters. Montgomery, Underwood, Sessoms and Stepps connected for one hit each. Sessoms scored 2 runs and Montgomery scored a run. Underwood drove in a run.
Tar Heel will travel to Williams Township Thursday.
