Greyson Heustess tossed in 12 points to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to a 37-31 Bladen Five Middle School Conference boys’ basketball victory over visiting Elizabethtown Middle School Thursday.
Clarkton jumped to an early 4-0 lead on baskets by Seven Campbell and Adonis Avery. After Elizabethtown tied the game, Greyson Heustess scored on a driving lay-up and Pierce Melvin hit a free throw. Melvin hit a fifteen foot runner at the end of the first quarter to give Clarkton a 9-7 lead.
During the tightly contested second quarter, Heustess nailed a long three pointer. Baskets by Campbell and Heustess combined with a free throw by Teyshaun Berkeley gave Clarkton a 17-13 lead going into intermission.
After Elizabethtown spurted ahead early in the third quarter, Melvin drained back to back three pointers to tie the score. Two baskets by Avery and a free throw by Campbell cut the Elizabethtown lead to 29-28 at the end of the third period.
Clarkton got a basket by Heustess early in the final period to take the lead. Avery, Melvin, Heustess, Campbell, and Drew Harris combined to make 8 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Melvin finished with 9 points for the Blue Devils, and Avery followed with 8 points. Campbell pulled down 9 rebouunds and added 6 points.
The Blue Devils improved to 6-0 with the victory. Elizabethtown is now 3-3.
