Clarkton School of Discovery Boys 32, Elizabethtown 30

The Clarkton School of Discovery boys had to fight hard to pull out a 32-30 win against the Elizabethtown Middle School Cougars in Bladen Five Conference play Thursday afternoon.

It looked like it would be an easy win for the Blue Devils after they led by 11 points, but the Cougars wouldn’t give up and tied the game at 30-all at the end of regulation play.  The Blue Devils had to take the game into overtime to pull out the victory.

The Blue Devils were leading, 12-2, after the first quarter.  Pierce Melvin started the game for Clarkton with the first of his two three-pointers.  Adonis Avery chipped in a basket for Clarkton before Elizabethtown’s MaJuan McKoy scored the only goal in the first quarter for the Cougars.

For Clarkton, Seven Campbell hit a free throw, Melvin swished another three-pointer, Avery hit a free throw, and then Avery turned around and scored on a fast break.

Early in the second quarter, Clarkton’s Tayshawn Berkeley hit a free throw to put the Blue Devils up, 13-2.  Devon Lesane scored for Elizabethtown, and then Campbell dished off a perfect pass to Berkeley to move the Blue Devils to a 15-6 lead.

Lesane scored again for Elizabethtown, and Campbell answered for Clarkton.  With 2:31 in the quarter, Lesane scored again for the Cougars, but Clarkton’s Melvin hit two free throws to keep the Blue Devils in a 19-8 lead going into halftime.

Elizabethtown’s Anthony Wooten scored first in the third quarter, and Clarkton’s Melvin answered.  Lesane went to the line for the Cougars, hitting the tail end of his two-shot foul shots, but Clarkton’s lead remained at ten, 21-11.

Greyson Heustess drove through the lane to score for Clarkton, and then Elizabethtown’s James Higgins hit a basket and Corey McKoy, a three-pointer to trim Clarkton’s lead to 23-16 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cougars went on a scoring streak in the fourth quarter on baskets by Lesane and Josh McKoy before Wooten hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 23.  Avery scored for Clarkton, and Lesane hit a jumper for Elizabethtown to tie the game at 25.

Heustess went to the line for Clarkton, hitting the front end, to put Clarkton into a one-point lead with 3:06 left in the last quarter.  A three-pointer by Wooten put the Cougars in the lead for the first time in the game with 2:10 on the clock.

Clarkton’s Campbell drove inside to score and tie the game for the third time, but Lesane dropped one in to put the Cougars back into a 30-28 lead.  Campbell answered for Clarkton, tying the game again at 30.

With under a minute in the game, Elizabethtown passed the ball around, looking for a good shot.  When the shot wouldn’t go, Clarkton’s Campbell yanked down the defensive rebound to give Clarkton possession of the ball with 18 seconds on the clock.

In overtime, Clarkton’s Berkeley and Melvin hit a free throw each to give the Blue Devils the 32-30 win.
