Clarkton School of DiscoveryTAR HEEL – Nazire Smith tossed in 16 points to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to a 40-30 Bladen Five Middle School Conference boys basketball victory over Tar Heel Thursday night.

Smith buried a pair of 3-point shots and another basket to spark the Blue Devils to a 16-3 first quarter lead. Teammate Anthony McGill pumped in 2 baskets, and Lamont Pridgen and Nyquan Richardson added a basket each.

Larry Council cracked the scoring ice for Tar Heel with a basket, and Anthony Cowan hit a free throw.

Lancine Soumanoro threw in a trio of baskets for the Panthers in the second quarter, Antonio Candelaria netted a basket, and Cowan cashed in a free throw.

Smith tossed in a pair of baskets, Richardson nailed a 3-point shot and Donnie Ezzell sank a basket to keep the Blue Devil lead at 25-12 at halftime.

Pridgen connected for the only Clarkton basket in the third quarter, but Cowan rallied the Panthers with a trio of baskets, and Soumanoro and Candelaria dropped in a basket each to close the gap to 27-22.

McGill and Samaj Dove drained 3-point shots, and Smith canned a basket and 2 free throws as Clarkton pushed the lead back to 10 points. Richardson delivered a trio of free throws in the final period.

Cowan made a trio of free throws and drilled in a 3-point shot for the Panther in the final quarter, and Soumanoro added a basket.

Richardson finished with 8 points for the winners, and McGill followed with 7 points.

Cowan topped the Tar Heel scoring with 14 points, and Soumanoro finished with 10 points.
