ELIZABETHTOWN – Braylon Waddell and Khair Bowens sparked an 11-5 3rd quarter spurt that snapped a 16-16 tie and propelled East Columbus to a 35-31 Waccamaw Middle School Conference boys basketball victory over Elizabethtown Thursday night.

Waddell tallied 5 of his 8 points during the run, and Bowens drained a 3-point shot and a free throw. Bowens led all scorers with 15 points, and J. Spears added 10 points for the Hawks.

Tykee Hill sank 2 free throws and a basket, Damian Maynor made 2 free throws, and John Monroe and Nathan Demery tossed in baskets as Elizabethtown edged ahead 10-9 in the 1st quarter.

Sheldon Melvin threw in a basket and a free throw, Monroe canned 2 free throws, and Demery hit one to keep the Cougars even 16-16 at halftime. Demery banged in 2 baskets in the 3rd quarter, and Hill connected on a free throw.

Hill pumped in 2 baskets in the final period, and Monroe, Demery and Melvin popped in baskets, but the Hawks held on for the win. Hill and Demery shared scoring honors for the Cougars with 9 points each. Monroe followed with 6 points, and Melvin totaled 5 points.

Coach Darius Gillespie’s Cougars will host Clarkton School of Discovery Wednesday at 5:15 in the Bladen County Tournament.
