ELIZABETHTOWN – Nathan Demery and Sheldon Melvin combined for 18 points Tuesday night to lead Elizabethtown Middle to a 33-19 Waccamaw Middle School ‘AA’ Division boys’ basketball victory over Tar Heel.

Demery led all scorers with 10 points for the Cougars, and Melvin tossed in 8 points. Teammate John Monroe finished with 6 points, and Damian Maynor added 4 points. Osvaldo Fuentes and Shyron Thompson shared Panther scoring honors with 6 points each, and Keon Whittington followed with 4 points.

Monroe and Demery pumped in 2 baskets each to spark the Cougars to an early 8-5 lead. Thompson threw in 2 baskets, and Cedric McKiver netted a free throw to keep Tar Heel close.

Demery drained a 3-point shot and a free throw in the 2nd period, and Melvin popped in a basket to stretch the Elizabethtown lead to 14-7. Fuentes muscled in a basket for Tar Heel in the quarter.

Fox Sutton buried a 3-point shot for the Cougars in the 3rd quarter, and Monroe, Demery and Kaden Johnson rang up baskets to keep the lead at 23-15. Whittington fired in a pair of baskets for Tar Heel, and Levi Garcia and Thompson contributed a basket each.

Fuentes worked the paint for a basket and 2 free throws, and Cooper Mills sank a free throw for the Panthers in the final period, but Melvin poured in 2 baskets and 2 free throws, and Maynor connected on 2 free throws and another basket as the Cougars padded their lead.

Coach Darius Gillespie’s Cougars improve to 2-5 in league play and 3-8 overall and will travel to West Columbus Thursday. Tar Heel, now 0-6 and 1-8, will host East Columbus Thursday.
