ELIZABETHTOWN – Tevin McLean blistered the nets with 20 points Thursday night and led Elizabethtown’s Cougars to a 34-23 Waccamaw Middle School Conference boys’ basketball victory over Tar Heel.
McLean buried a 3-point shot and 2 other baskets in the opening period, and teammate Isaiah Lee tacked on a free throw as the Cougars raced to an 8-0 lead.

Tar Heel cracked the scoring column in the 2nd period as Kaleb Gaddy fired in a 3-point shot, another basket and a free throw. Dguan Smith tossed in a basket, and Tavion Smith sank a free throw. McLean answered with 2 baskets, and John Monroe dropped in a basket to keep Elizabethtown up 14-9 at halftime.
McLean pumped in another 3-point basket and 2 other buckets in the 3rd quarter. Braylon Cromartie popped in a basket, and Monroe made a free throw as the Cougar lead grew to 24-11. Axel Martinez flipped in the only Panther basket in the period.
Lee threw in 2 baskets in the 4th quarter, and McLean, Ayden Williams and Ronnie Covington delivered a basket each to keep the Cougars on top.
Tavion Smith and Josiah Belle-Robinson bombed in 3-point shots in the 4th quarter for Tar Heel. Tavion Smith and Dguan Smith added 2 free throws each.
Lee followed McLean on the Cougar scoring list with 5 points. Tavion Smith and Kaleb Gaddy shared scoring honors for the Panthers with 6 points each. Dguan Smith followed with 4 points.
Coach Larry Williams’ Cougars improved to 2-1 on the season and will travel to West Columbus Tuesday. Tar Heel, now 0-2, will host East Columbus on February 7th.
