Middle School Boys Basketball: Elizabethtown 34, Tar Heel 29

ELIZABETHTOWN – Dominick Collins fired in 8 of his 15 points during a third period surge that propelled Elizabethtown to a 34-29 Waccamaw Middle School Conference boys’ basketball victory over Tar Heel.

The Cougars held a 20-18 halftime lead before 4 baskets by Collins, another basket by DeJohn Lesane and a free throw by Kewone Maynor opened up a 31-24 Elizabethtown lead. Stefane Jessup bombed in a 3-point shot, and I’Keir Murchison flipped in a basket and a free throw for Tar Heel in the period.

Murchison sank 3 free throws, and Christopher Perez cashed in 2 free throws for the Panthers in the final quarter. Darius Williamson dropped in a basket and a free throw to keep the Cougars on top.

Williamson and Lesane followed Collins on the Cougar scoring list with 6 points each. Murchison topped all scorers with 16 points for Tar Heel. Jessup totaled 5 points.

Collins sparked the Cougars to an early 11-6 lead with 2 baskets and a free throw. Lesane canned 2 baskets and 2 free throws, and Williams flipped in a basket. Murchison popped in 2 baskets, and Jessup added one for the Panthers.

Murchison keyed a Panther rally in the second quarter with 3 baskets. Cornelius Esters pumped in 2 baskets, and Tavion Smith netted a basket.

Chris Harding tossed in 2 baskets, and J’Marius Smith hurled in another to keep the Cougars ahead. Collins hit 2 free throws, and Williamson made one.

It was the season opener for Coach Larry Williams’ Cougars who will play Clarkton School of Discovery Monday at Bladenboro in the Bladen County Tournament. Tar Heel, now 0-2, will play at Bladenboro Tuesday in the Bladen Tournament.
