ELIZABETHTOWN – Center Javant McDowell and guard JaQuez McKoy combined for 23 points Thursday night to lead unbeaten Elizabethtown to a 36-11 Bladen Five Middle School Conference victory over Clarkton School of Discovery.
McDowell led all scorers with 13 points, and JaQuez McKoy followed with 10 points. Teammates Lefrederick Wooten and Nysaan Wooten finished with 4 points each.
McKoy fired in a 3-point shot and 2 more baskets to lead the Cougars to an 11-1 first quarter lead. McDowell worked the paint for 2 baskets in the period. Cornelius McArthur made a free throw for the only Blue Devil point.
McDowell dropped in 2 more baskets in the second quarter, and teammate Zach Meares drilled a 3-point shot. RaSean McKoy threw in a basket, and JaQuez McKoy hit a free throw as the Cougars stretched their lead to 21-5 at halftime. McArthur and J. T. Junious scored the only Blue Devil baskets in the second period.
McDowell muscled in another basket, and Lefredrick Wooten sank 2 free throws for the Cougars in the third period. McArthur and Junious threw in a basket each to keep Clarkton within 25-9 at the quarter break.
Guard Garrett Melvin tossed in the final CSD basket, while the Cougars tacked on 11 more points in the fourth quarter. Nysaan Wooten pumped in 2 baskets, McDowell scored a basket and a free throw, McKoy canned another basket, and Wooten hit 2 free throws.
McArthur led the Blue Devils with 5 points, while Junious totaled 4 points.
The Cougars moved into first place in the Bladen Five with a 4-0 league record, while the Blue Devils dropped to 3-1 in league play.
