CLARKTON – Daquan Cox beat the final buzzer with the game-winning basket as Nakina edged Clarkton School of Discovery 36-34 Monday night in Waccamaw Middle School Conference boys basketball action.
Clarkton took a 30-22 lead into the final quarter, but a 12-4 Mustang run tied the game 34-34 before Cox’s decisive shot. Isaac Ward keyed the Nakina rally with 5 points. Jonathan Johnson and Nyquan Richardson sank 2 free throws each for the Blue Devils in the period.
Samaj Dove led the CSD scoring with 13 points, and Richardson followed with 10 points. Corey Robbins added 5 points. Cox topped the Nakina scoring list with 13 points. Ward followed with 10 points, and Carter Lee tallied 8 points.
Richardson bombed in a pair of 3-point shots in the first quarter, Lafon Monroe threw in a basket, and Dove netted a free throw to keep the Blue Devils even at 9-9.
Dove sparked the Blue Devils in the second period by draining a pair of 3-point shots and another basket. Robbins and Lee Barnes popped in a basket each as the Blue Devils edged ahead 21-19 at halftime.
Robbins buried a 3-point shot in the third quarter, Dove pumped in a pair of baskets, and Richardson tossed in a basket as a 9-3 run padded the Clarkton lead to 30-22.
The Blue Devils, now 3-8, will visit Hallsboro Tuesday.
