BLADENBORO — Carnell Lewis and Cedrick McKiver combined for 21 points to lead Tar Heel to a 33-17 Waccamaw Middle School Conference boys’ basketball victory over Bladenboro Wednesday night.

Lewis topped all scorers with 12 points, and McKiver tossed in 9 for the Panthers. Teammate Demarious Guions tossed in 6 points, and Jarvis McMillan added 5 points.

Coach Ken Cross’ Panthers, the Waccamaw ‘A’ Division champions, improved to 10-1 on the season and will play Clarkton School of Discovery in the opening round of the Bladen County Tournament Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Bladenboro. The Bulldogs, now 6-4, will battle Elizabethtown at 7 p.m. in Tuesday’s final game.

Sincere McKinley, Corben Chadwick and Isaiah Minus shared scoring honors for the Bulldogs with 5 points each.

McKinley sank 3 free throws and a basket in the 1st quarter, and Chadwick netted a free throw as Bladenboro edged ahead 6-5. Guions and McKiver pumped in baskets, and Lewis canned a free throw for the Panther points.

Lewis rallied the Panthers with 2 baskets and a free throw in the 2nd period. McMillan and Guions popped in baskets, and Levi Velasco-Garcia made a free throw as Tar Heel edged ahead 15-11. Minus threw in 2 baskets and a free throw to keep Bladenboro close.

Guions, Lewis and McKiver dropped in baskets in the 3rd quarter, and McMillan swished a free throw as the Tar Heel lead grew to 22-13. Chadwick scored the only Bulldog basket in the period.

McKiver drained a 3-point shot and another basket in the final period as the Panthers stretched their lead. Lewis powered in a pair of baskets, and McMillan netted a free throw. Chadwick and Jace Lesane rang up baskets for Bladenboro in the quarter.
