Gustavo Bravo Verdugo fired in the game-winning goal late in the second half Tuesday night to give Tar Heel a 1-0 victory over Clarkton School of Discovery in the Bladen Five Middle School Conference boys soccer opener for both teams.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half and for the first 24 minutes of the second half before Verdugo blasted in the penalty kick with only 6 minutes remaining on the clock.
Antonio Candelaria recorded the shutout in goal for the Panthers.
Tar Heel will battle Elizabethtown at 5 p.m. Tuesday at County Park. Clarkton School of Discovery will play Bladenboro in Tuesday’s 4 p.m. opener.
