ELIZABETHTOWN – Elizabethtown clinched the Bladen Five Middle School Conference football championship Thursday night with a 41-8 victory over Clarkton School of Discovery.

The Cougars remained unbeaten with a 5-0 record and hold a 2-game lead over Bladenboro with only one game left to play.

After a short Blue Devil punt, the Cougars scored on their first play from scrimmage as Darius Autry raced 19 yards around right end for a touchdown. Quarterback Freddy Wooten circled left end for the 2-point conversion and an 8-0 lead with 5:26 left in the first period.

On the next Cougar possession, Javant McDowell galloped 36 yards around left end for the touchdown. Zach Meares rammed through the line for the 2-point conversion and a 16-0 lead 1:31 before the quarter break.

The Blue Devils were backed up after the kick-off, but quarterback Jake Garrison flipped a swing pass to Garrett Melvin who scampered 15 yards out to the Clarkton 28 yardline. However moments later, a turnover gave the ball back to the Cougars.

Two plays later Meares bolted around the right side 27 yards to the end zone with 5:54 remaining in the half. Victor Garcia split the uprights with the extra point kick for a 23-0 Cougar lead.

The Blue Devils recovered Elizabethtown’s on-side kick attempt at midfield. After a personal foul penalty, Melvin scooted 35 yards around left end for a Clarkton touchdown. Melvin also skirted left end on the same play for the conversion that trimmed the margin to 23-8.

Clarkton’s on-side kick attempt was scooped up by Jakya Bennet who rumbled 51 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown and a 29-8 Elizabethtown halftime lead.

On the Cougars first possession of the second half, Wooten connected with McDowell on a 61-yard touchdown pass that grew the lead to 35-8.

Chase Starkloff darted 21 yards around right end for the final Elizabethtown touchdown.

The Cougars will host Tar Heel next Thursday night, while Clarkton School of Discovery, now 2-3, will entertain Bladenboro.
